Today could only be described in one way: Wet!
My day began when Seth Davis and Kevin Knowles invited me to go SCUBA Diving with them. The line stretched into a mob that moved slowly for about an hour and a half. Finally, Davis, Knowles, and I were able to get trained in diving and the instructors sent us into the pool. Other scouts that went SCUBA Diving include Paul and Andrew Van Steenburgen and Rosse Gates. I interviewed the three of them and they described their experiences.
Gates, East Hampton, said, “I put the thing [air tank] on, went underwater, swam this way, swam that way, had no idea where I was, looked up and said, “Follow the bubbles!” Andrew Van Steenbergen remarked that he, “…forgot to breathe many times. It was weird when I flipped over and I had to swim like a turtle. Paul Van Steenbergen also said that the experience was weird, but interesting. Personally, I found that my throat was very dry when I was breathing, because the contained air has to be very dry to protect the gear.
On our way back, we stopped for lunch and a large rain storm began. The storm forced many into tents, but the three of us decided to head back to camp. We walked through the rain, Davis and I in rain coats. Knowles opted not to wear one, and suffered the consequences when the rain picked up and got him wet as if he had just left the SCUBA Tank again.
When we arrived back at camp, the rain stopped. We spent the entire rain storm walking! The site was in ruins. Many tents had been flipped or flattened. The scouts at camp all pitched in and helped to recreate our small town. My tent was flooded and a mess. I had to pull out each piece of gear and empty my tent of the about gallon of water that had entered it.
Once the tents were staked back into the ground, another storm came. It did not last as but we did make it through without any destroyed tents.
Overall, it was a great day. I was lucky not to have lost my phone or iPod in the mess, but I had a great time even cleaning up.
